one sentence thoughts on my last week of watches
DEFENDING YOUR LIFE (Albert Brooks, 1991): Charming and thoughtful, but MODERN ROMANCE this is not.
THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (John McTiernan, 1999): Pierce Brosnan, handsome and suave, speaks like a timid animal that was just transformed into a powerful alpha dog human.
COLLATERAL (Michael Mann, 2004): New speed for Cruise, initial scenes in the taxi are divine, jazz club scene takes it home.
THE FIRST OMEN (Arkasha Stevenson, 2024): One particularly shocking image, a strong second half, never heard of this director but she’s arrived.
MONKEY MAN (Dev Patel, 2024): Gorgeous and stylistically bold, but more opaque than it realizes, seams very visible on this one.
ROAD HOUSE (Doug Liman, 2024): Had no business looking this good, I’m referring to Conor McGregor’s souped up ass and the cinematography both.
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM Shaq ep: Larry was more of a dick when he was younger, the years soften us all.
RIPLEY pilot: Fighting to justify its existence, but Andrew Scott and the moodier B&W vibes overshadow a lesser Dickie.
